On March 11, 2017 artists, psychologists, biologists, mathematicians and many others come together at De Balie on the theme of “transformation”. The reason for this evening is the 100th anniversary of the famous work “On Growth and Form” by D’Arcy Wentworth Thompson.

Under the guidance of Judith Lengkeek (Verte Narrative) renowned speakers from different continents discuss transformation on the basis of very diverse research, including the study of coral growth (Jaap Kaandorp, University of Amsterdam), brain development in children (Milene Bonte, Maastricht University), computer modeling ( John Ashburner, UCL) and hyperbolic crochet (Daina Taimina, Cornell University). Curator Matthew Jarron of the D’Arcy Thompson Zoology Museum (University of Dundee) shows how artists and architects were inspired by Thompson and artist Peter Schräder finishes off the evening with a particularly appropriate performance involving soap bubbles!
